STAY SAFE

The Geocaching Capital of Canada is rich in crown land, beautiful country clothed in autumn splendor and perfect for geocaching. It is also prime hunting territory. If you are out on trails, WEAR ORANGE and don't travel alone. Moose hunting season starts Saturday, Oct. 21 and dear hunting Saturday, Nov. 4. Take the hunting attribute on the caches seriously.

Jonny Harris, (aka Constable George Crabtree from Murdoch Mysteries, and host of CBC's Still Standing show) was touring Wilberforce in the Geocaching Capital of Canada earlier this month. Jonny found this popular geocache.  Have you?

Rumor has it that there will be a new cache placed by Jonny and the Still Standing crew somewhere in the Geocaching Capital of Canada.  Stay tuned and like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/GeocachingCapitalofCanada/ for all the latest news.

More Fibre!

Fibre is important to you and we are doing our best to supply it.  No, not more bran, we mean fibre optic internet service.  And although it was scheduled to be installed by June 1, 2016, when do things go as scheduled?  But it IS coming to the municipal office in Wilberforce.  Until it does, the wifi connection at the municipal office is temporarily unavailable.  This doesn't effect the other handy wifi locations in Wilberforce:
Wilberforce Library N45 02.320 W078 13.428
Agnew's General Store, Wilberforce N45 02.266 W078 13.381

The Elusive Cell Game

Is it here, is it there, is it anywhere?  The seven hamlets and the 72,842 acres of Crown Land that make up the Geocaching Capital of Canada offer some of the most stunning scenery you’ll find in Canada. (a fact based on a totally unbiased opinion poll of selected Highlands East residents), but the trade off, at this point in time, is “less than ideal” cell phone reception.  Okay, I’ll fess-up—cell service sucks, some areas are a total black out.  To compensate make sure you have your cache info saved off line or printed out.  Good news is that the Geocaching Capital of Canada will gladly rent you a GPS, preloaded with all the GeoTour coordinates for only $5.00 a day. You may not be able to rely on “phone a friend” for help— but you can always bring a friend with you! In fact we highly recommend it.

Non-Hibernating Host

Some of our resorts do close down for the winter after Thanksgiving, but the House in the Village B&B in Wilberforce welcomes Geocachers year round. And Roberta at the Bostonian Motel in Wilberforce will always offer you comfy quarters.  Call ahead to make arrangements so you don’t find yourself snuggling in with some hibernating bear.

Was that a BEAR or did your stomach just growl?

Hopefully it was the latter.  Here’s Grrrrrreat Tips on hunting for Grub in the Geocaching Capital of Canada.

The South Algonquin Diner in Wilberforce has just undergone renovations and reopened with a new menu.  Look for the absolutely scrumptious-delicious GeoBurger.  And be sure to discover the GeoBurger trackable.

Caching in Gooderham?  Kei’s Chinese/Canadian Restaurant (across from the aggravating, but oh so cleaver Pioneer Cemetery Cache, GC5K7V8) is closed for the season but Graham’s Restaurant (offering Tupper T. Turtle approved butter tarts and the nearby Sleeping Dogs Cache, GC5QA9A) awaits your visit.

After looking for Dragons in our Midst Cache, GC5QYR2 in Cardiff look across the road to find the Cardiff Country Store offering a café and snacks to go.

Closed for the season but a smoking place to eat next spring is the Olde Ridge restaurant in Harcourt (the Black Box Cache, GC5M19A hangs out there.)

If you’re too focused on caching to relax for a sit down meal, grab grub to go from the grocery stores in Gooderham, Cardiff or Wilberforce (check out the deli counter).
